Light Spectacular

LEARNING OUTCOME

Through investigation, learn about the mysterious world of light. What is white light? How does it behave through refraction and reflection?

SESSION activities

  • Light travels through waves.
  • Use mirrors and lenses to explore refraction and reflection.

SCIENCE EDUCATOR demonstrations

  • Newton colour wheel.
  • How do our eyes work?
  • Objects can be transparent or opaque.
  • Using lasers with prisms and mirrors.

STUDENT experiments

  • Construct rainbow glasses to see how to break white light into colours.
  • Investigate colour through the use of torches and coloured paddles.
  • Using a jel ball to see how refraction works.
  • Exploring the use of double mirrors to demonstrate the reflection of light.

POST WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Australian curriculum

Yr 5-6 *Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted (ACSSU080)

*With guidance, pose clarifying questions and make predictions about scientific investigations  (ACSIS231)

victorian curriculum

Yr 5-6 *Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted ( VCSSU080)

*Light can form images using the reflective feature of curved mirrors and the refractive feature of lenses, and can disperse to produce a spectrum which is part of a larger spectrum of radiation (VCSSU105)

*Collaboratively and individually plan and conduct a range of investigation types, including fieldwork and experiments, ensuring safety and ethical guidelines are followed (VCSIS108)

*Communicate ideas and processes using evidence to develop explanations of events and phenomena and to identify simple cause-and-effect relationships (VCSIS088)
