Paddle Steamer Science
LEARNING OUTCOME
- Force can be stored in objects like rubber bands
- Sound is a vibration and can be amplified with a bell shaped object
- Pitch can be high or low.
LESSION activities
- Observe a miniature steam engine at work
- Construct and sail a paddle boat
- Understand that paddle steamers use sound to communicate with other boats
- Use different sized cups to investigate pitch and amplification
SCIENCE EDUCATOR demonstrations
- Demonstrate the workings of a steam engine and discuss the components and how they work together
- Demonstrate the production of vibrations that produce sound
- discuss how this is used o the river to communicate
- Discuss and demonstrate changes in Pitch
STUDENT experiments
- Follow instructions to construct a paddle boat from simple materials
- Predict the movement of the boat when a stretching force is applied in different directions and conduct an experiment to test the predictions
- Use a piece of string to produce sound
- Experiment with sound cups. Different sized cups produce different sounds.

Australian curriculum
Yr F-2 The way objects move depends on a variety of factors, including their size and shape (ACSSU005)
Light and sound are produced by a range of sources and can be sensed (ACSSU020)
Participate in guided investigations and make observations using the senses (ACSIS011) (ACSIS025)
Yr 3 -4 With guidance, identify questions in familiar contexts that can be investigated scientifically and make predictions based on prior knowledge (ACSIS053) (ACSIS064)
With guidance, plan and conduct scientific investigations to find answers to questions, considering the safe use of appropriate materials and equipment(ACSIS054) (ACSIS065)
Yr 5-6 With guidance, pose clarifying questions and make predictions about scientific investigations (ACSIS231) (ACSIS032)
Identify, plan and apply the elements of scientific investigations to answer questions and solve problems using equipment and materials safely and identifying potential risks (ACSIS086) (ACSIS103)
victorian curriculum
YrF-2 The shape of objects will affect how they move (VCSSU035) (VCSSU048)
Actively observe, explore and manipulate(VCSIS037)
Participate in guided investigations, including making observations using the senses, to explore and answer questions (VCSIS051)
Yr 3 – 4 The way objects move depends on a variety of factors including their size and shape: a push or a pull affects how an object moves or changes shape (VCSSU048)
With guidance, pose questions to clarify practical problems or inform a scientific investigation, and predict what the findings of an investigation might be based on previous experiences or general rules (VCSIS065) (VCSIS050)
Yr 5-6 With guidance, pose questions to clarify practical problems or inform a scientific investigation, and predict what the findings of an investigation might be based on previous experiences or general rules (VCSIS082)
With guidance, plan appropriate investigation types to answer questions or solve problems and use equipment, technologies and materials safely, identifying potential risks (VCSIS083)
