There is a growing problem in the near space around the Earth. It has become a junk yard and there is a risk that in the not too distant future, there will be too much junk in space to allow satellites to operate. Australia is highly reliant on satellites because of our long distances and relatively small population so an Australian venture is proposing a clean-up. The intent is track very small bits of space debris and then to slow them down by firing a laser at them. By slowing them down they will then fall out of orbit and burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere.
